About the festival

A new Christmas tradition for Cape Town

When the sun sets over the Durbanville vineyards, Meerendal comes alive with light.

The Cape Town Festival of Lights turns one of the Cape's oldest wine estates into an illuminated wonderland. Wander a trail of glowing sculptures, grab a bite to eat, and let the kids run free beneath a sky of colour.

It's an evening out for everyone: couples on a date night, friends catching up, and families making memories together. Come for the lights. Stay for the magic of a summer night in the winelands.

What to expect

Five ways to fall in love with the night

A full evening out, with something new around every corner. Here's a taste of what's waiting after dark.

  • Light sculptures

Follow a glowing trail through the estate, past larger-than-life sculptures that shimmer, pulse and change colour as night falls. Every turn reveals something new and a fresh photo moment.

  • Food village

Hungry? Our food village brings together some of Cape Town's favourite vendors, from hearty street food to sweet treats. Grab a bite, find a spot and soak up the atmosphere.

  • Picnic spots

Spread out your blanket and toast the evening under the lights. Our picnic areas are made for slow nights with good company.

  • The Wishing Tree

Buy a ticket, write down a wish and hang it on our Wishing Tree. As the festival goes on, the tree fills with hopes and dreams from across Cape Town, with purchases supporting a different local charity each week.

  • Kids' activities

Little ones can step into Santa's Village, meet their favourite festive characters and enjoy a line-up of activities designed just for them. Parents can relax knowing the festival is built for the whole family.

Meerendal Wine Estate

Why Meerendal

The perfect setting for a summer night

  • Three centuries in the making

Meerendal's story began in 1702, when the first vines were planted on the slopes of the Tygerberg Hills. Today it's one of the Cape's historic wine estates, and one of the first farms in South Africa to plant Pinotage.

  • Close to town, a world away

Just 20 minutes from the city centre in Durbanville, Meerendal is easy to reach yet feels like a true escape. Vineyards, open skies and cool Atlantic breezes set the scene for a perfect evening outdoors.

  • Space to roam

The estate's sweeping grounds give the light trail room to breathe, with plenty of space to spread out a picnic blanket, explore at your own pace and let little ones play.
